As the local State Member of Parliament, Ann Barker helps make sure the Oakleigh electorate gets its fair share of funding and resources from the Brumby Government. Including:

  • more nurses in Southern and Bayside health regions
  • opened a new ambulance station in Carnegie
  • extra $10.4 million to reduce delays in local emergency departments and improve patient support
  • improved ambulance response times for emergency calls in Glen Eira and Monash

  • Health for Kids in the South East project targeting asthma and other common childhood illnesses
  • $30 million to decrease elective surgery waiting lists
  • $6.8 million to upgrade radiation therapy services at the Alfred Hospital
  • $500,000 to develop Australia's first dedicated Paediatric Lung Transplantation Program at the Alfred Hospital
  • $2.1 million for state-of-the art radiology suite at the Alfred Hospital's Emergency and Trauma Centre
  • $23.5 million (2006/07) for Stage 1 of redevelopment of Caulfield General Medical Centre
  • $28 million (2007/08) for Stage 2 of redevelopment of Caulfield General Medical Centre
  • $61.5 million for The Alfred Centre new elective surgery facility

Monash Medical Centre

  • $10 million to expand and improve the Emergency Department
  • new Day Treatment Centre
  • extra 30 beds as part of the winter emergency demand strategy
  • improved neonatal facilities
  • introduced new anaesthetic equipment
  • extra funds for cleaning and random cleanliness audits
  • 6 new operating theatre tables
  • 3 extra infection control nurses and better infection control procedures
  • opened a children's sleep disorders unit
  • 8 new beds and 5 recliner chairs for day treatment
  • post-graduate training scholarships for nurses
  • construction of an ambulatory care centre to reduce costly inpatient admissions
  • funding for low cost filmless emergency department imaging
  • program to fast-track cardiac surgery
  • new equipment to treat acute respiratory failure
  • $346,000 to establish a new ward specialising in treatment of asthma and other respiratory illnesses
  • funding to participate in new services to assist new mothers with mental health issues and post-natal depression
  • $3 million upgrade at Moorabbin campus for same-day elective surgery, expanded high dependancy unit facilities and improved operating theatres
  • $19 million to expand radiotherapy facilities at Monash Medical Centre, Moorabbin
  • funding to participate in new $3 million research centre to reduce hospital acquired infections
  • $1.8 million for dialysis patient unit at Monash Medical Centre, Moorabbin
  • Medihotel funding - supervised overnight accommodation for patients who don't need a hospital bed
  • $4.2 million for 4 paediatric intensive care beds
  • $3 million for new operating theatre and to increase capacity of High Dependency Unit, Moorabbin Elective Surgery Service

MonashLink Community Health Service

  • restored elected community representation
  • membership up from 40 to 600
  • funding to address critical refurbishment and information technology needs at the Hughesdale site
  • new funding for Home and Community Care Program
  • improved accounting and reporting systems
  • funding for staff training, health promotion and counselling
  • more funding for community dental services
  • school dental service for 1400 extra students in the local area
  • installed a computer terminal providing free access to health information over the internet
  • $50,050 to expand allied health activities
  • $50,000 to expand physiotherapy, podiatry and occupational therapy services
  • $100,000 minor capital works funding for communication systems
  • $767,000 funding boost for chronic disease management and treatment services
