Hughesdale Primary School will benefit from a new multi-purpose synthetic sports surface thanks to $90,000 Brumby Labor Government boost.
Joining Member for Oakleigh, Ann Barker MP, at the school to announce the funding, Sports Minister James Merlino said students would soon be able to enjoy a range of sports all year round thanks to the boost.
“The Brumby Labor Government understands how important sport is for communities and the benefits of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for all young people,” Mr Merlino said.
“The effects of the drought have forced us to think of new ways to keep sport alive in the face of climate change. This funding is about giving the local community more opportunities to get involved in sport and recreation – no matter what the weather brings.”
Mr Merlino said the funding would see the installation of a new synthetic surface at the school to cater for the growing popularity of soccer and athletics at Hughesdale Primary.
“The lack of rain has taken its toll on ovals, pitches other sporting facilities across the state but this new synthetic surface will be drought proof and extremely hard-wearing,” he said.
“It will also be available for after school use, allowing students, local schools, community members and teams to access the pitch and play all year round, in all seasons.”
Mr Merlino visited the school to announce the grant from the Victorian Government’s Commonwealth Games Legacy Program committed to the development of multi-sport playing surfaces at primary schools.
Ann Barker congratulated everyone involved in helping to secure funding for the project for their hard work and commitment.
“It’s important that Hughesdale Primary continues its strong academic focus, but it’s also good to have an emphasis on sport and recreation as well,” Ann Barker said.
“And Hughesdale does a fantastic job in providing a balance of both to help students become good all-rounders.
“Healthy, active involvement in sports at school helps to build a sense of community, achievement and belonging in students.”
