Ann Barker, State Member for Oakleigh, joined with the Mayor of Monash, Councillor Charlotte Baines, to officially open the new-look Oakleigh Aquatic Centre, on behalf of the Sport and Recreation Minister, James Merlino.
“The Oakleigh Recreation Centre has been a cherished community asset since it opened in 1958. It’s fantastic to see the pool’s facilities upgraded to suit the needs of local people,” Ann Barker said.
“The new pool provides the ideal place for club, regional and local school swim carnivals, learn-to-swim programs, water aerobics, lap swimming, and water therapy."
“Most importantly, these improvements will help re-establish the pool as a place where locals can swim, meet up with friends, enjoy time with the family, learn new skills, exercise, develop a sense of belonging, and have summer fun for years to come,” she said.
The project, worth more than $10 million, included the redevelopment of the 50m heated outdoor pool, diving pool, toddlers play pool and installation of a new shaded water playground, heated outdoor relaxation pool and spa, change rooms, café, indoor and outdoor seating, as well as improved access for people of all abilities.
There’s also a strong focus on environmental sustainability with the installation of solar boosted heating and the use of recycled water and rain water for key elements of the redevelopment.
Ann said she was very proud to represent such a strong local community who had fought so hard to save the Oakleigh Pool.
“Not only did they reverse the decision by Monash Council to close the Oakleigh Pool, their hard work saw a commitment by council of just over $8 million to complete the refurbishment,” Ann Barker added.
“I am also pleased that the Victorian Government through the Community Facility Funding Program was able to provide $2 million towards the project, ensuring for example that the diving facilities could remain and be upgraded.”
Ann thanked Julie Clearwater who had undertaken leadership of the community campaign and gave her time, effort and commitment without hesitation.
“My thanks also to the many local residents from all age groups, the local schools and sporting organisations who never gave up in their efforts to save our local pool. This is a fantastic outcome and a direct result of state, local government and the community working together in partnership to benefit the community,” Ann Barker said.
