Ann Barker is a member of the Victorian Government led by Premier John Brumby. The Brumby Labor Government is delivering strong leadership in tough global times to see Victoria through and build for recovery.
Since John Brumby became Premier two years ago, the Victorian Government has had three broad aims:
The recent bushfires caused the worst natural disaster, and prompted the largest recovery and rebuilding effort in our history. The Brumby Government took decisive action and set up the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund, established a Royal Commission and worked with the Federal Government to establish the Victorian Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority.
The Brumby Government has implemented a jobs stimulus program which, along with the efforts of the Federal Government, is securing and creating jobs for thousands of Victorians and rebuilding schools, hospitals, and public housing. The Victorian government also secured 35,000 jobs in a record Budget infrastructure investment.
Education is the Brumby Government’s number one priority. In the past year 113 schools have been earmarked for extensions and major renovations under the $1.9 billion Victorian Schools Plan and with the Federal Government an additional $2 billion will be delivered to Victorian schools through the Building the Education Revolution.
The Brumby Government is committed to ensuring all Victorians have access to world-class health services and has made a record investment of around $2.6 billion. The government has approved the $1 billion Comprehensive Cancer Centre and made a record budget investment of $826 million to tackle elective surgery waiting lists and boost hospital capacity.
In 2008 the Brumby Government released the landmark Victorian Transport Plan, a $38 billion program of immediate, medium and long-term projects to transform our transport system and create jobs to drive our economy. After an exhaustive international search, Metro Trains Melbourne and KeolisDownerEDI were selected to operate Melbourne’s trains and trams.
In the last year Victoria has again been the safest state in the country with record police numbers and more police on the frontline now than ever before. A record $1.9 billion Victoria Police budget was provided in addition to a $143 million community protection package.
This Government is delivering water projects that are transforming the state and reducing our reliance on rainfall as we face the reality of climate change. These significant projects include the Northern Victoria Irrigation Renewal Project, the desalination plant, the Sugarloaf Pipeline and the Tarago Reservoir.
The Brumby Labor Government is working shoulder to shoulder with the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Federal Government to make the right investments to see Victorians through the Global Financial Crisis.
